Descending the Dragon
Descending the Dragon
My journey down the coast of Vietnam
Director Jon Bowermaster
52 min

Sometimes the longest journey begins with great patience. When Jon Bowermaster proposed an 800-mile kayak expedition along Vietnam's northern coastline, the country's government initially responded, "That will be quite impossible." Negotiation saved the day, and Jon Bowermaster and his team of five - including a Vietnamese-American woman who had fled Saigon as a child on the final day of war in 1975 - completed an unprecedented voyage, seeing Vietnam and its people in a brand new light.

Ribbon of Sand

Ribbon of Sand
Director John Grabowska
27 min

The famed Outer Banks of North Carolina are a slim and moving line of sand in the open Atlantic. Many travelers think they know these islands—but south of Ocracoke Inlet there rises a luminous bar of sand sixty miles in extent, with no roads, no bridges, no hotels: the wild beaches of Cape Lookout, one of the few remaining natural barrier islands in the world. At once an exaltation and elegy, Ribbon of Sand profiles this seascape and the transitory islands doomed to disappear. The film features quotes by environmental pioneer Rachel Carson as interpreted by acclaimed actress Meryl Streep.

Watercolor Artist Jerianne Van Dijk
Composer Mark Vance
6 min

Mark Vance had approached Jerianne Van Dijk wanting to capture Jerianne’s art process with a new composition. The idea was perfect for film so they enlisted the help of filmmaker Patty Eacobacci. They met in early March of 2007 for the first official brainstorm session. By August and many versions later the final cut of River Play was ready for submission to the local film festival.

The film incorporates Van Dijk’s watercolor paintings with live video footage of the Yuba River and its environs. The music score carries the viewer on a fun, whimsical, jazzy ride that  Vance masterfully composed for the endeavor.

The Hooded Mderganser is a rare and reclusive duck found only in North America. Every spring, in the Great Lakes region, the wary hen lays and incubates her eggs in a nest high in the trees. Wood Ducks on the Briary
A film by Hoyt "Rooster" Minges
15 min

Wood Ducks on the Briary was shot in Lenoir County on a blue stream near Ralph Road.  Filmmaker Rooster Minges used to hunt water fowl, but he gave up the sport in the mid-eighties when his interest turned to conservation.  The inspiration for the film came grew out of his current hobbie--constructing nesting boxes.  He has captured some great close-up observation footage, he says, " all it takes is patience, warm clothes and a duck blind with a roof."  Minges will be on hand to answer questions at the film festival screening in Kinston at the new Visitors Center (101 E. New Bern Road) on January 22.  Click here for details or to purchase tickets.
