New Bern North Carolina Fish Kill Information and Updates

In 2009, residents and visitors to the Craven County area witnessed the largest fish kill in the Neuse River in decades.  The Lower Neuse RIVERKEEPER® as well as staff and volunteers of the Neuse RIVERKEEPER® Foundation estimated that more than 100 million fish, mostly Atlantic menhaden, died between August-September 2009. The Neuse RIVERKEEPER® Foundation invite you to be a part of the efforts to make our waters safe again by supporting the Neuse River Clean River Initiative. By supporting this initiative, you will enable our staff and volunteers to continue to monitor and test the waterways of the Neuse River basin to collect data that could ultimately lead to putting an end to horrible events such as the one we are witnessing right now.

By donating through this link, your gift will support the Neuse River Clean River Initiative and you will become a partner in finding the solution to devastating events caused by poor water quality in the Neuse River.

A picture is worth a thousand words!

I need your help.

As the Lower Neuse RIVERKEEPER, I have been on the Trent and Neuse Rivers on a daily basis during the recent fish kills. It has been painful to watch the fish die. I have asked local and state water quality and health officials to tell us what is killing the fish. I have also repeatedly asked officials to tell us whether it is safe to use the rivers while fish are dying and decaying. An additional concern was the tens of thousands of seagulls that were defecating as they fed from the kill. I repeatedly asked these agencies to answer one important question: Is it safe to use river water? There has been no response.

Day after day, I watched little children wade into the water and, in some cases, play with the dead fish. I have come to realize that the only way my question would be answered is for me to establish a credible monitoring program and report the results directly to you. This multiple-year project will be called the "Neuse/Trent Safe Water Initiative" as part of our continuing RiverWatch program.

To do this, I need your help. Please consider giving a donation to the Neuse RIVERKEEPER Foundation for the specific purpose of purchasing water sampling equipment and paying the lab fees for analysis of water samples that are collected from the Neuse waterways. I am not asking you to pay my salary. I am not asking you to pay administrative expenses for the Neuse RIVERKEEPER Foundation.

In return for your support, I will conduct this monitoring in a way which obtains credible information about the safety of the water and will report the results to you. I will also post the information on our website for you to check regularly.

To donate to the "Neuse/Trent Safe Water Initiative", mail your donation to the Neuse RIVERKEEPER Foundation, 1307 Country Club Rd, New Bern, NC, 28562, or donate online at www.neuseriver.org and click on the "Donate" button on the home page.

Thank you for your support.
